The Continental is a historical
venue in New York’s music scene, as many of the
greats have played there at one point in their career.
This is evident as soon as you walk through the double
doors and see the black and white photos framed on the
walls: The Ramones, Iggy Pop, Nashville, Pussy, Sebastian
Bach, Kelly Deal, The Bouncing Souls, D- Generation,
and Patti Smith, just to name a few. The Continental
is particularly famous for its support of Joey Ramone,
who played his last show here on December 11, 2000.
His photograph graces the club’s walls along with
a plaque featuring some nice words about the punk pioneer.
Every year, the club holds a tribute to Joey, which
last year took place on Dec. 30th with Markey Ramone
and friends. |

Powered by a strong
sound system and good stage equipment, the Continental is
a great place to check out budding bands. The club has and
always will be a great supporter of the music scene in New
York; by not exercising genre discrimination they set a good
example amongst other venues in the city, showcasing local
and national acts from all different styles of music on a
daily basis. If you decide you want to rock out to something
more familiar, there’s always the occasional tribute
band (like Sabra Cadabra, he Black Sabbath-covering regulars).

And while all
events during the week are 21+ (be sure to bring your
ID or you will not get past the quirky bouncers, no
matter what the excuse), there’s also plenty of
shows for the underage crowd: The Continental recently
started showcasing bands in all-ages shows on Saturday
and Sunday afternoons. In conjunction with some outside
promoters, the club has helped many unsigned bands (particularly
with CMJ and Frank Wood’s M..E.A.N.Y. Fests) and
remains a powerful venue for bands on the search for
big breakdom or that great record deal in the sky.
The website is a great resource,
especially for the performers, as it lists EVERY band
that is booked and offers bands the opportunity to post
links for their own webpages. They also offer a lot
of info on the club’s equipment and booking process.
Aside from its historical significance and band-friendly
policies, The Continental is just an all around great
venue for live music in Manhattan. Plus, the drinks
are relatively inexpensive, so if your feeling extra
touristy or sentimental, you can use the cash you save
to puck up your own commemorative Continental T-Shirt
or hat! |
