Fix Up, Look Sharp:
Dizzee Rascal Makes
His U.S. Debut

by Joe O'Brien

Mercury Prize winner and British hype magnet Dizzee Rascal delivered a solid performance in his U.S. debut at Brooklyn’s Volume on February 7th. Unfortunately, the crowd felt lukewarm for the most part, hitting the red only during “Fix Up, Look Sharp” towards the end of the set.

Although his so-called “grimy” beats pack visceral punch through headphones, making you feel like you’re trapped in Playstation 2’s “Grand Theft Auto: East London,” dancing to most of them requires some pratice. Despite seeming a bit restrained (understandable for a 19 year old kid in his U.S. debut, no matter how prodigious), Dizzee’s alien-like flow was fine-tuned and provided a lightening fast beat for those who couldn’t get down to the gloopy grime. So it wasn’t exactly on the level of that other famous British Invasion which occurred two days short of forty years ago. But if Dizzeemania fails to sweep the states, it’s certainly not the music’s fault.
