Don Hill's

With its plain brick wall exterior, you might not expect the crazy antics, out of control theme party nights and buzz band showcases that occur within Don Hill's (511 Greenwich Street in SoHo).

The interior, separated into a bar section and a stage section, is dim and plush with cozy lounge seating; the only discomfort you might encounter would be the 20-minute bathroom wait.

Every Wednesday night Don Hill's features Rock Candy, a night to celebrate 80's excess, hair metal hellzapoppin' and rock n' roll debauchery. DJ/Host Steve Blush, along with assorted rock bands, keep people partying through the night. Every third Wednesday hosts Bitch, where the Rock Candy house band (headed by Brucifer) blasts 80's metal and a "gaggle" of hard-ass chicks rip through Judas Priest covers. Thursday night features BeavHer, where DJ Frankie Inglese spins faves from the late 70's to the mid 80's.

Then there's the Saturday extravaganza known as Tiswas, a night that showcases up and coming indie, pop and electro acts. Headed by DJ Nick Marc and Justine D, Tiswas has become an entity of its own. On January 24th, when Tiswas hosted a launch party for +1 Music, the place was packed to the brim, cover charge was $10 and drinks were moderately priced. And in case you haven't already heard elsewhere in this issue, there was a sweet "surprise" performance by a little band called stellarstar*. Although the bathroom line was just as brutal, I had a good time. (For more info check out http://www.tiswas.com)

When there aren't off-the-wall DJ nights or theme parties for playing dress up, there are even more live industry showcases on Tuesday nights- worthwhile if you're interested in seeing the "next big thing" of the month. (I recently caught an industry showcase for the band Splender at Don's a while back where Mr. Clive Davis himself was chilling in his own velvet rope area. Of course he was so excited when I tried to pass over my business card, he lost all control and dropped it on the ground.)

Some of the staff members have a reputation for being rude, but I consistently have fun every time I go to Don Hill's. All nights are guaranteed to draw a dramatically decorated crowd, and the rock n' roll atmosphere is often accented by go-go girls, boys and otherwise, who twirl around brass poles hoisted over two bars. I am certainly going to check out the next Bitch night on February 18th. For more info about upcoming events visit http://www.donhills.com
