The Low Life
Thixotropic (self-released)
by Corey J. Feldman

The Low Life mix head-bobbing rock, funk, and reggae grooves and top them with the buttery vocals of singer/guitarist Evan Bliss. And while it’s easy for many axe-wielders to use common chords in common ways, Bliss and fellow guitarist Karim Baki incorporate standard chords in creative and more complicated ways than the average rock band. Yet, in spite of its more complex progressions, Thixotropic is a party album with upbeat, fun songs that are at times humorous and at other times, just plain old catchy. I cracked up listening to “Fiona,” thanks to silly couplets like “I love you so/but you act like such a ho.” “Every Little Thing” is another humorous song about waking up with no concept of what happened to you last night.

Like I said, it’s a party album, although it ends with an acoustic road song called “Four Walls,” in which Bliss sings, “Spend all day driving/taking in horizons/So many that we’ve left behind/We’ll be together/we’re so fucking clever/Off into the sunset we’ll ride.” Thixotropic could be the soundtrack to your next shindig or your next road trip, and it will definitely be part of my personal rotation for quite some time.
