The Matches are blowing everyone away. It’s insane. I asked every band I interviewed at Warped which sets they would recommend checking out, and practically every band responded with “The Matches.”

And why am I surprised, the Oakland band is definitely a refreshing addition to Warped Tour. Straight out of California, the band signed onto Epitaph Records and re-released their debut album “E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals” in May 2004. They’ve been making noise and drawing attention on every tour they’ve been on, including a tour with fellow Epitaph labelmates Matchbook Romance in the spring. Other bands they have shared the stage with are Reel Big Fish, Lit, and Zebrahead, just to name a few.

The Matches is not a band easily confused in a pool of 2348634 other contemporary bands; their music is nothing short of eccentric. To classify them as “punk” is to give up on trying to formulate a new word to describe their sound. The treat of this band is definitely their live show. Lead singer Shawn Harris’ magnetic stage presence and guitarist Jon Devoto’s insane guitar solos are enough to draw the eyes and ears of any unsuspecting listener. Their sets are intense in-your-face energy, but not to the point where you are overwhelmed with so much good stuff going on that it turns bad; no, this band has definitely mastered the art of being unfathomably awesome.

One thing that’s readily apparent with The Matches is that they’re out there to say what they want to say whether you like it or not (but they don’t seem to have a problem with the latter issue, since everyone seems to love everything they’ve been saying). “We don’t have many enemies,” says Harris, “but we just met Lars Fredrickson, and he says if anyone fusses with us he’ll take care of them.” I guess it’s time for The Matches to make some enemies (if it’s even possible) because hey, you can’t pass up an offer like that!

All nonexistent enemies aside, The Matches was one of the hardest working bands on Warped Tour this year, and their hard work paid off. They are tearing shit up and throwing it in the faces of eager audiences all over the US. They were so popular at Warped that they played the Uproar Stage at almost every date, even at shows they weren’t originally scheduled to play. They are one of the few bands I’ve witnessed to rock an acoustic set as if it’s an electric one. At the August 8th Englishtown Raceway Warped date, The Matches played a four-song acoustic set at the Alternative Press tent that got the crowd moving.

Not only have they caught the attention of hundreds of new fans at every date on Warped Tour, but The Matches have also made fans out of dozens of bands on the tour as well. The Early November repeatedly plugged the band’s set during their performance at the August 6th, Camden, NJ, Warped date, and fellow Warped Tour buddies Yellowcard are bringing the band on tour with them in the fall.
