Warped Tour Feature:

Letter Kills
Interview w/ Paul

Sat. August 7th 2004
Randall's Island NY
by Shawna Adams

Letter Kills are:
Matt Shelton – Vocals
Timothy Cordova - Guitars
Dustin Lovelis - Guitars
Kyle Duckworth - Bass
Paul Remund – Drums

Cityzen: You guys were on Warped last year and you were invited to stay on the tour?

Paul Remund: Well actually, last year we got kicked off Warped Tour. It was the last day of the tour in Asbury Park, NJ, and we got in a fight with security. Kevin Lyman was like “You’re never coming back again!” but our tour manager is pretty tight with Kevin. There was a guy taking Kevin Lyman by the neck and our manager actually rescued him, so everything ended up being fine and here we are on Warped again.

CZ: So how’s the tour been this summer?

PR: It’s been good and a lot of fun. There’s less work for us now that we’re more established, and we’re actually in a bus now, which is sweet. Plus we have a crew this year. When you have to work more when you’re in a band, you have more of a drive because you have to survive in a way, so you’re that much more intense. So we’re a little more relaxed now – we’re really enjoying it.

CZ: How does being on a massive tour like Warped differ from being on a smaller tour such as the Sugarcult tour?

PR: I think it’s way cooler playing club shows because you’re personal with the bands and the kids, and the sound is much better.

CZ: So you prefer smaller club tours?

PR: Yeah I do, but I still do really like playing festival type tours like Warped Tour because there are so many people you get to meet and hang out with and check out on a tour like this.

CZ: Your debut album “The Bridge” came out recently. How does it feel? How’s it been since the release?

PR: It’s been great. I mean, this is like my dream.

CZ: How long have you guys been a band?

PR: Well all of us together have been a band for two years, but prior to that we were all in different projects.

CZ: How did you guys get together – what’s the history of the band?

PR: It was me, Tim and this other guy who sang for us and it was just the three of us jamming. Then our singer left and we toured through Texas, and Matt was doing his own thing in Texas. We asked if he wanted to join since our singer just quit and Matt was like, “No way, I’m not going to move to California to play for some band I don’t know!” but he changed his mind and joined. So it was the three of us for two months and then the other two guys picked it up in California, and that’s how it happened.

CZ: Which band member would most likely do the following: Most likely to drive?

PR: Tim

CZ: Most likely to crash or get a ticket?

PR: Me

CZ: Most likely to serenade a cop on his knees to get out of a ticket?

PR: Matt

CZ: Most likely to break your fingers if you try to switch the music playing?

PR: Dustin

CZ: Most likely to sleep the entire way from New York to California?

PR: Matt

CZ: Most likely to stop for a bathroom break every 15 miles?

PR: Dustin – he’s pooped his pants in the van and he’s peed his bunk (laughs).

CZ: Most likely to be late when you need to get on the road?

PR: Me

CZ: Most likely to be reading the map upside down?

PR: Me

CZ: Most likely to bring someone you’ve never seen onto the van?

PR: Me

CZ: Now I’m going to give you the names of a few states. Tell me the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the name of the state. New York

PR: This store – I think it’s called “Trash” – in NYC.

CZ: California

PR: Home

CZ: Texas

PR: Cowboy Matt (laughs).

CZ: Michigan

PR: My mom – she was born there.

CZ: Massachusetts

PR: Furthest place from home that we had to travel – the last date on the tour.

CZ: Oklahoma

PR: Okie

CZ: Florida

PR: South Beach

CZ: Alabama

PR: I just met someone from Alabama…Chris, from the All-American Rejects – are they from Alabama?

CZ: They’re actually from Oklahoma…Pennsylvania

PR: Sex

CZ: What’s the best plan for world domination? If you had any way to take over the world what would you do?

PR: How I would go about doing that or what I would do once I do take over the world?

CZ: Well why don’t you start with how you’d go about doing it and then what you would do once you have taken over the world (laughs)

PR: I would…gosh I’m not good at these types of questions…the best person to answer this question would be Justin from Motion City Soundtrack (laughs) but I would say I would just…do it…

CZ: So once you do…

PR: I would have a wife. Yeah that’s what I would do honestly…just someone to have.

CZ: Is that the hardest thing about being on the road, keeping relationships with family and girlfriends?

PR: Well probably for the people in the band who have girlfriends, but for me I’m pretty OK to be away from my family.

CZ: What are 10 essential items on the road?

PR:
1. Baby wipes
2. George Foreman grill
3. Water
4. Cigarettes
5. Beer
6. Pillow
7. Cheese and
8. Tortillas because we make quesadillas every day on that Foreman
9. I hate to say this but TV…I feel so stupid after I watch TV but for some reason I can’t live without it…
10. None given!

CZ:Now we’re going to do some word association: Play dough

PR: Socrates (laughs)

CZ: Chestnuts

PR: Will Ferrell…for some reason…I think there was a line in some movie about roasting chestnuts?

CZ: Coffee

PR: Tim - he’s a coffee addict. I can’t drink it, it’ll come out very quickly (laughs).

CZ: Stapler

PR: That dude form that movie – Office Space – Milton?

CZ: Chicken

PR: Every day – catering

CZ: How is the catering?

PR: It’s good – it’s chicken every day though – but it’s healthy.

CZ: Happiness

PR: Right now

CZ: Awww

PR: Yes…it’s beautiful.

CZ: Metrosexual

PR: You know, I’ve been called that once or twice before but I think it’s stupid. The whole concept is retarded.

CZ: Eyeliner

PR: Necessary

CZ: What about mascara?

PR: No, I’ve done the shadow thing before though (laughs).

CZ: Sushi

PR: I love sushi.

CZ: Dunkin Donuts

PR: Good breakfast sandwiches surprisingly.

CZ: Cell phones

PR: I dropped mine in the toilet 3 days ago!

CZ: Did you get a new one?

PR: Well I had a free one from Samsung.

CZ: Now the question is - before or after?!

PR: Actually, during! I was peeing and talking to my brother and it was an important conversation too – I hadn’t talked to him in like a month – and it just fell in. So I was like “ughhhhh” and I finished up and reached in and took it out and rinsed it (laughs). Now I’m just waiting for it to come back - it’ll come back. I swam with a phone at last year’s Warped and it came back – it took a while, but I came back. After a week you’ll start to see it flickering (laughs).

CZ: If you could create a dream tour with any five bands currently together, who would you pick?

PR: I’m not really into too much music these days, so it wouldn’t be a dream tour really, but a good tour would be Foo Fighters, us, Velvet Revolver, The Distillers, Motley Crue…

CZ: And now from the past…

PR: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Stones for sure, Tom Petty, and probably The Smiths.

CZ: What’s your advice to a band going on tour for the first time – is it possible to go on tour and still be speaking to each other at the end of it?

PR: On your first tour is when you’re the closest. I mean now at this point we fight a little but when we first started we were just so excited to be on tour. But advice would be to definitely just work your hardest and play the best you can and just worry about the music, that’s the most important thing.

CZ: As you’ve traveled, what’s the biggest surprise you’ve found from the kids or places you’ve been?

PR: Autographs I think are what surprised me the most. I think if I was a fan of some band like The Beatles or something, I’d much rather have a picture than an autograph – I don’t really understand autographs. I mean I appreciate the fact that they want my autograph, but why do you want ink – I think a picture is more special.

CZ: Are home shows always the best?

PR: Home shows are always the best because it’s the kids who heard you first and have been supporting you, but it’s also very awesome to play different cities and see kids excited to see you.

CZ: What bands besides your own would you recommend checking out at Warped?

PR: There were a few but they’re already off the tour. My Chemical Romance…The Sounds…The Rolling Blackouts – they were on a small stage but they were really good, and they got kicked off the tour for peeing right behind main stage (laughs). They were caught peeing during someone’s set so they got kicked off, which I think is a pretty cool way to get kicked off this tour (laughs).
