Friday Night, September 16th:

I headed to the ASCAP showcase at Bar 13 to catch Youth Group’s acoustic set – which was amazing. This band is the next Coldplay – don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Singer/guitarist/songwriter Toby Martin and drummer Danny Allen are the core of the Australian band. Their second album, Skeleton Jar, - released in 2005 on Epitaph Records – is the perfect combination of pop and melancholy, largely due to Martin’s beautifully haunting voice. In the past week, I haven’t been able to stop listening to the record.

Afterward I was off to Crash Mansion. The Firebird Band from Chicago were up first. They were funky synth-rock and definitely worth checking out. The Chris Mills band came on next, and only after four or five songs did I begin to appreciate their music. In their first song I distinctively remember hearing the lyrics “I was high/But not high enough/I could still drive/If I had to” …

And later, in the third song, the lyrics “Totally fucked” were definitely slipped in a few times.

The unfortunate case with this band is that their music is good and very enjoyable if you’re not paying any attention to their lyrics. However, I did notice a progressive improvement in lyrics as their set went on and I have faith that maybe they will seek the assistance of a lyricist to fix a few of those earlier song lyrics.

The last band was California-based Limbeck, with Robb MacLean on vocals and guitar, Patrick Carrie on guitar, Justin Entsminger on bass, and Matt Stephens on drums. As my roommate Nicole describes them, “Limbeck is like when you’re road tripping with your friends and you stop in some dive bar on the way to Kansas, and this band is playing and everyone just starts singing along.” Their music is upbeat rock with a twinge of country. Imagine yourself in a group of campers gathered around a bonfire, singing songs with acoustic guitars.

Saturday, September 17th:
CMJ 2005 went out with a bang on Saturday night. I headed to Irving to catch Against Me! open for Coheed & Cambria. Against Me! play what I call “total man music.” I don’t think I know any Against Me! fans who aren’t male. Accordingly, the male to female ratio was at its all-time highest at Irving. I stayed for a few of Coheed & Cambria’s set and then bounced to watch an Atlantic Records coworker of mine, Keith Ward, and his band play at Kenny’s Castaways on Bleecker street. Check out Keith’s band if you’re into singer/songwriter piano rock. http://www.keithwardmusic.com

My stint as an everyday New York music lover attending CMJ 2005 left me in recovery for days, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. It’ll never cease to amaze me that no matter how hyped up everyone gets about CMJ, no matter how ready we think we are, it totally kicks our asses. Until next year…
