Do
The Roo!
Cityzen Heads
To Bonnaroo '05 |
Since
its inception in 2002, Bonnaroo has become a landmark
event revered as “Festival of the Year”
by Pollstar, Spin, Billboard and Rolling Stone,
among other accolades. A four-day, multi-stage
camping festival held on a 700-acre farm in Manchester,
Tennessee, the event’s first three annual
installments each sold out up to 90,000 tickets
with no traditional advertising‚ an unprecedented
achievement. The event has spawned a host of related
products, including festival merchandise, several
volumes of live CDs, and a series of DVD documentaries,
the first of which reached gold status within
five months of its release date.
With
headliners like Dave Matthews & Friends, The
Dead, Trey Anastasio, Bob Dylan, and Widespread
Panic, Bonnaroo features many of the top artists
in the grassroots rock genre, along with hosts
of acts in complementary styles such as jazz,
bluegrass, singer/songwriter, hip hop and electronica.
Bonnaroo programming combines the richness of
roots traditions with the freshness of the cutting
edge, combining many styles and formats into one
dynamic experience. In its three years of existence,
a staggering range of artists have performed at
Bonnaroo, from veteran legends such as James Brown,
Neil Young, and Emmylou Harris, to hip-hop groups
like Jurassic 5 and The Roots, to eclectic singer-songwriters
Ben Harper and Jack Johnson.
In
2004, Cityzen Entertainment Inc’s own Corey
J. Feldman covered the events along with photographer
Jared Bronz (Click
here to see last year’s coverage).
This year, Cityzen founder Craig Cook joins the
crew for another year of coverage with full press
access to the behind the scenes mayhem. We are
going to be out of the office from June 8th thru
the 15th, but will be updating Cityzen from the
media tent as often as possible.

Experience Europe: A Backpacking Adventure
Shawna Adams brings us six European
Cities in six weeks; only at Cityzen.tv!
On
March 17th, two brave, attractive, and daring
students, Shawna and Amy, embarked on 18 days
of nonstop backpacking across Europe. Both players
were involved in the New York University study
abroad program in London, England, and decided
to spend spring break taking advantage of how
ridiculously cheap it is to travel in Europe.
They set out on an amazing quest to find one thing:
Men in Kilts (not to be confused with Men in Tights,
as in "Robin Hood Men in Tights," a
comedy favorite of both travelers). Shawna writes
about the history, the food, the catcalls, and
the revelries the two ladies found on their journey
through six cities:
Dublin, Paris, Venice, Florence,
Rome, and Athens
Join
us at Cityzen.tv every thursday for the next six
weeks to find out if they were successful in their
quest to find kilted men…
...for
now though, here's quick proof that their quest
was not made in vain:
|

Amy
and Shawna posing with a group of kilted Scotts they ran
into in Venice.
Kilted men in Venice - coincidence?! I think not."

Meet
Shani Frymer!
We
know that you want to meet our writing staff. This
month we bring you our newest columnist, Shani Frymer.
Writer by day, Superhero by night, Shani is a great
addition to the Cityzen team and a terrific art
critic. |

Born
and raised in our fair city of New York, Shani
Frymer is a writer and photographer extraordinaire
by day, superhero by night. A recent graduate
of Bennington College, she is accustomed to having
dress up day every day. She shoots enormous color
abstracts that are almost comperable to her beauty,
and peruses the art scene like a true patron,
regardless of her (fashionable) but starving artist
status.

As
some of you may or may not know, Broadcast
was permanently cancelled last week by the
management at Bar 13.
Michael
& Jess would like to take this opportunity
to thank all of the promoters of Broadcast
in
all of it's various forms. Not to mention,
our "unofficial" third partner in
crime Andy Shaw of Shaw Promotions.Throughout
the last 6 years we've had some great
bands, guest dj's, performers and a bunch
of other little odds & ends. However,
the most important part of "the little
thursday night party that refused to die"

Presents: Who's Watching You?
A Photo Exhibit by Will Star

Opening
Night Party: Saturday, February 19th- 7PM
Having
the feeling that you are being watched used to
be a sign of paranoia, but in our day and age,
it's merely a consciousness of reality. It has
been estimated that there are upwards of 7,200
video surveillance cameras in place on the streets
of New York City alone, owned by police authorities,
private businesses and residences. In our post
9/11 world, there has been a hard push to expand
the reach of video surveillance in our cities,
but could any number of cameras really prevent
a similar tragedy?
|
| |
Voyeuristic
desire, God complexes, and plain fear drives us
to constantly keep a watchful eye over our neighbors.
|
"Who's
Watching You?" is a photographic exploration
of lower manhattan focusing on the various closed
circuit television cameras found in our public
spaces. A selection of 10 prints have been culled
from a collection of hundreds to present the most
dramatic scenes involving video surveillance.
|
The
photos will hang at Rififi for one month, starting
Saturday, February 19th @ 7pm, and a special video
installation will run for that opening night only.
You must come to the party to experience the unique
video presentation!
|
|
Music
for the party will be provided by none other than
The Stunt Specialists "Worlds Most Dangerous
DJ Posse."

| So
You Wanna Make It In The Music Industry?
We
get requests all the time from up and coming
artists asking for help when it comes to the
myriad issues that an artist faces in this
crazy business of music. After a stint as
a panelist with the NYIMF, where I received
hundreds of press packages of all shapes and
sizes, I decided it was time to start giving
you, the cityzen readers, the information
that you need to step up your professional
approach. Our first installment of
Tricks
of the Trade takes
a look at the press package and it's construction
in part 1 of a three part press package series.
Future topics in development include courting
A&R, successful grassroots promotion,
how to book a tour, securing radio play and
more. We're going to be calling in some big
guns to give you the best advice out there,
so stay tuned for some articles from our friends
in high places. For now, check out How
To Make An Effective Press Package- Part 1. |

As
I watched the coverage of Ronald Regan's funeral on
every channel on the planet, I was hearing a voice
in my head. Numerous times throughout the memorial,
America the Beautiful was sung by various military
choirs. Each time, the memory of Ray Charles and his
contributions to our country and the world echoed
in my mind and brought me to tears. As our country
mourns the passing of "The Great Communicator,"
may we always keep in mind that the most emotive form
of communication we have is song.
